While Apple is still dragging its feet when it comes to delivering support and compatibility for Windows Vista, Microsoft has addressed a problem this month. Concomitantly with the release of iTunes 7.1 at the beginning of March 2007, Apple has warned of potential iPod corruptions with Windows Vista.

"Ejecting iPod from Windows Explorer or by using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in Windows Vista may corrupt your iPod. Microsoft is working on a software update for Windows Vista which addresses this compatibility issue. Apple recommends Windows Vista customers who own an iPod install this software update when it becomes available, click here for more information. To always safely eject an iPod, choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes," revealed Apple.

Microsoft confirmed the problem, but also revealed that users could come across such a scenario when they would eject the iPod via Windows Explorer. As early as March 9 2007, Microsoft informed that it would release an update to resolve the problem.

Microsoft made available two updates designed to address the matter at hand. Update for Windows Vista (KB933824) and Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB933824) are both available for download, require a restart after installation and will make your iPod run smooth with Windows Vista.

It is interesting that Microsoft has also issued the update for x64 editions of the operating system although Apple does not currently support iTunes for the 64-bit platform, be it Vista or XP. Is Apple going to unveil support for x64 Windows Vista?
