Windows 8 is at this point the third top OS worldwide, still behind Windows 7 and Windows XP, but statistics for the United States are quite good news for Microsoft.

Figures provided by StatCounter for the month of September reveal that most Americans are still running Windows 7 right now, as this particular version is now installed on no less than 46.58 percent of computers in the country.

Windows XP comes second with a market share of 14.69 percent, while Mac OS X reached the last place on the podium with 12.55 percent of the computers in the US.

Windows Vista remains the fourth choice for Americans, as it’s still powering 8.5 percent of their desktop PCs, while Windows 8 is next with 7.63 percent.

If this really matters, Windows 8 has managed to overtake some popular mobile platforms, including iOS and Android, but it clearly lost the battle with all the other desktop operating systems, including Microsoft’s biggest disaster in history.
