Back at the beginning of February 2007, on the heels of the Windows Vista launch, Microsoft introduced the Windows Mobile Device Center for Windows Vista. The RTM of WMDC was subsequently placed on Windows Update the following week. Version 6 of the Windows Mobile device center for Windows Vista was designed to streamline setting up new partnerships, synchronize content and manage music, pictures and video, bridging Windows Mobile devices with Microsoft's latest operating system.

But even with Vista's business and consumer availability since November 2006, and January 2007, respectively, and despite the RTM of Windows Mobile Device Center, the integration of the two products has not been problem free. This is why Microsoft has been cooking an update for WMDC. Microsoft Product Manager Nick White, revealed that the company is getting close to refresh WMDC, and at this point, all signs are pointing to mid June for the release of the update.

According to White, Microsoft has enhanced WMDC 6. Version 6.1 of the Windows Mobile Device Center will bring to the table improvements in contrast to the current product, in addition to standard fixes for functionality issues.

"In the next few weeks, the Windows Mobile Device Center team will be launching an update to Windows Mobile Device Center 6.0. Aside from bug fixes and improvements over WMDC 6.0, the update (version 6.1) will include feature support for Windows Mobile 6 devices; this includes support for file synchronization on both touchscreen and non-touchscreen Windows Mobile 6 devices," White explained.

Microsoft will deliver the update to WMDC a couple of weeks into the next month, and the company has placed strong emphasis on the way it will grow support for Windows Mobile 6. Currently, Windows Mobile 6 users are restricted to PCs - Smartphone synchronization via ActiveSync 4.5. The update will of course serve exclusively users of Windows Mobile 6 devices and Windows Vista.
