Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows Vista, is designed to bring flexible computing to the desktop. The Redmond company's perspective over Vista is that the platform will serve as a catalyst to evolve the desktop computing landscape and it has made available a resource describing various end-user scenarios. With Windows Vista at the center stage of the desktop, Microsoft has focused with the Flexible Desktop Computing White Paper
on analyzing both traditional and modern desktop computing alternatives. Essentially, the company has provided the guidelines necessary to increase desktop computing efficiency and improve the deployment infrastructure.

"For most organizations rich clients have been proven to be the most productive way from a desktop angle and with Windows Vista there are big improvements to make everyone even more productive. Combined with some server based elements, (e.g. Softgrid Application Virtualization, Folder Redirection, etc...) Windows Vista provides key benefits to enhance user productivity while increasing data security and management capabilities," revealed Dave Kim, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.

In the end, it all comes down to the total cost of ownership (TCO), and the means to reduce it. Flexible desktop computing for Windows Vista is nothing more than a comprehensive set of TCO reduction guidelines designed to satisfy both the corporate clients and the end user. With Vista, and with the wide range of computing options outside of classic PCs, Microsoft is offering not only security, but also mobility, flexibility and low cost desktop management.

"Still, for some organizations, the complexity of their environments have grown as some workers have very limited tasks in their desktop environments yet deal with massive amounts of sensitive data while other workers need full capabilities on their desktops. So the purpose of this paper is to provide an overview and a starting point for a discussion on some of the different desktop architectures out there as well as showing how Windows Vista can play an integral part in their deployment," Kim added.
