A compatibility boost for Windows Vista is like a breath of fresh air. Support and compatibility are two areas where the operating system has been suffering since its commercial availability
on January 30, 2007. In this context, added compatibility for Windows Vista feels like the first breath after coma for the users of the operating system that have faced functionality issues.

Although Microsoft did not release any security bulletins as part of the March 2007 company patch cycle, it did augment the compatibility area of Windows Vista. Update for Windows Vista (KB932246) is designed to address a suite of application compatibility problems of the operating system. The 4.1 MB .msu file will require that users reboot their Windows Vista machines following the installation.

The Vista compatibility update will resolve issues related to the installation and execution of legacy games and applications in Windows Vista. Microsoft revealed in the Knowledge Base article associated with the update that the game, application or firmware may not install correctly, cause system instability or even not function properly. This aberrant behavior has been corrected with the March 2007 Windows Vista Application Compatibility Update.

Additionally, the update boosts compatibility for the following products but not only:

■ Lenovo Presentation Director 1.0.0.1
■ ACDSee 8
■ Trend Micro Internet Security 2006 (PC-cillin) 14.0 - 14.59
■ Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 (PC-cillin) 15.0 - 15.19
■ Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Administration Tools Pack
■ RealNetworks RealPlayer 6.0.12
■ AOL Safety and Security Center 2.5.4.1
■ Toshiba Tecra M7 1.70

Another 70 applications that have experienced functionality issues while running under Windows Vista are addressed in this compatibility refresh.
