A problem of semantics and customer perception

Windows Vista is just another operating system. Nothing more nothing less. Symantec has moved to put to rest customers that confuse the security level of Windows Vista with an actual security solution. Through the voice of Vince Hwang, Sr. Security Response Researcher, Symantec aims to no less than to clarify the semantic confusion between secure and security as far as Windows Vista is concerned.

"If you do a search on Vista in your browser, you'll see plenty of material out there touting how "secure" Vista is. But let's face it, at the most basic level, Vista, in and of itself, is just another operating system. So, let's not confuse an operating system that's more secure with something that is an actual security solution that provides real protection against the breadth of computer attacks," revealed Hwang.

The fact of the matter is, and Hwang has also made this prediction, that circumventing the security measures in Windows Vista is just a matter of time. In fact, even Microsoft representatives, among which ex Co-President of Platforms and Services Jim Allchin, have warned that Windows Vista is neither foolproof nor perfect.

In this context, the general advice is for customers to deploy additional security measures on top of those delivered by the operating system. "At the end of the day, it won't be the secure operating system that protects [users] - it'll be security vendors with enough robust intelligence to keep ahead of the bad guys like Symantec who'll swoop in to save the day with comprehensive security solutions like Norton Internet Security or Symantec Client Security running on Vista," Hwang concluded.
