Backup is one of the aspects on which Microsoft has extensively focused in Windows Vista. That it why there is an array of nuances to the backup capabilities of the operating system. Also, Vista's backup options are not universal, but differ across the four editions. In the image at the bottom you are able to see what backup features are available according to the editions of the operating system.

While Windows Vista Basic only permits the most simple tasks associated with backup, the features grow in number for Windows Vista Home Premium that, in addition to the Ad hoc backup and recovery of user files and folders includes Scheduled backup of user files, Backup of user files to a networked PC or device, Incremental backup and Automatic backup scheduling.

Windows Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate editions comprise all the backup features made available by Microsoft adding Complete PC Backup and Restore (image based) and Shadow Copy (restore previous versions of your documents) on top of the options delivered by Vista Home Premium.

"All of the Backup and Restore features are presented in a single, unified control panel, called the Backup and Restore Center. It provides a single location from which you can access and manage your backup and restore activities," informs the Windows Vista Product Guide.

According to Microsoft, the backup capabilities of Windows Vista deliver a superior backup experience when compared to Windows XP. In Windows Vista, users are enabled to store the backup data on CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, external or internal hard drives or to a PC connected in the same network.
