At the beginning of January I provided you with a list of security solutions that were more or less Vista compatible. The fact of the matter was that with Windows Vista available as of
January 30, 2007, that list now needs an update. And this article aims to deliver just that. An update with the antivirus software that is compatible with 64-bit editions of Windows Vista. I even asked Microsoft about the x64 security solutions available.

"We're very please with the global security partner support we have received on Windows Vista as partners are critical to the success of our platform and the security of our customers. To date, Symantec, TrendMicro, McAfee, Sophos, CA, ContentWatch, GRISOFT, IMSafer, Kaspersky Lab and Panda Software International, PixAlert and SafeBrowse.com have all announced their intent to release security solutions for the Windows Vista platform. I have not reviewed every solution to determine the 32bit vs 64bit coverage but I can say that a variety of vendors are indeed providing solutions for both," stated Microsoft's Stephen Toulouse, senior program manager for the Trustworthy Computing Group.

After some research, I managed to track down a few security developers that deliver support for 64-bit Windows Vista. I am not saying that these are all, but they are the ones I managed to find. If you have anything to add, your input will be welcomed. Avast!, Grisoft AVG, McAfee, NOD32 and Symantec are all delivering support for 64-bit Windows Vista.

I´v tryed all of them, avast, avira, norton, avg, nod32...
nod32 is for 32 bit solutions and not 64 bit!
my personal opinion is avira or avast as a total solution.
They are a total solution, fast, easy to handle and do the work the work well.
What you choose is a matter of tast. Youse a hardware firewall.

McAfee is not compatible with Vista 64. I don't know where did you get this information that it is! I am a Comcast customer, and Comcast offer McAfee for their customers. So I know first hand that it does not work with Vista 64.

I have a new dell computer with vista and a 64 bit OS with mcafee security center preinstalled. I could not got the printer to work with the computer with the mcafee. And I tried all kinds of configurations and permissions on the mcafee with dell tech support. The only solution was in deinstalling the mcafee. I'm now looking for another protection program that won't interfere with my printer or anything else on my computer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

rick - My Dell with Vista 64bit is on order. My research has shown that Kaspersy specifically state their product works with Vista 64 bit:

I was also thinking about using Microsoft's own antivirus and PC protection solution, it seems a bit more complex than a simple software install as it can protect others in the home:

I hope this helps.

There is some excellent , free (but basic) 64 bit anti-virus software available from:

http://www.free-av.com/en/products/index.html

The documentation clearly states it's supported on 64bit:

Looks good to me, I'm currently looking to upgrade to 64bit Vista.

Most of this software will work fine with 64bit.
What you/we want is a 64bit version of the software and not just 64bit compatible.

I have an advise for all these troubled computers, make an effort and try other operating system, like Ubuntu 64 bit.

>> winfree:
While the release of Linux OS's like Ubuntu, openSUSE, and Gentoo have made it a much friendlier environment, the compatibility issues that would be experienced and unresolvable by the average user would frustrate them more than attempting to find an anti virus program that works.

I have been using avast! and it has been good to me. It even installs into the c:Program Files instead of C:Program Files(x86) =P. It can be acquired for free for the home user from their website and it is a full suite. P2P scanner, mail scanner, web scanner, network shield, instant messaging scanner. Covers all the major angles and works well.

Yes, what a great idea, let me switch to linux so that I can no longer run 90% of the software I want to use, that will solve ALL my problems.

Yeah it works fine with vista 64. I have had it running before but not at the moment. Don't much care for McAfee that much.
