Developers have released some interesting statistics

A month after elementary OS "Freya" was released to the public, the developers have made public some details about the platforms that download it and the results are pretty surprising. From the looks of it, the Windows users are the main downloaders of this Linux OS.

elementary started its life as a collection of themes for Ubuntu, but it evolved into a full-fledged operating system. A third iteration of elementary OS called "Freya" was released only a month ago, and it's been a real success. In fact, each new version of elementary seems to greatly surpass the previous one, and the distribution promises to be around for a long time if it keeps this up.

It's easy to guess that many of the people who downloaded Freya were Linux users that already had the previous version or that wanted to try something new. Surprisingly enough, it looks like the Windows and Mac OS X users have been much more interested in this new operating system than their Linux counterparts. Who could have guessed that?

elementary OS "Freya" as a Linux advocate

It's not really a secret why Windows users chose this particular Linux distribution to try. It's one of the most beautiful operating systems out there, even if it's not the most customizable or the most flexible you can find. Its makers have a vision for it, and they are doing everything to make it happen, despite of what some users of the Linux community might think about it.

"Freya was downloaded over 400,000 times already, with two-thirds of downloads coming from closed-source platforms. This shows that elementary is actively growing the open source market, and we’re pretty proud of that," said Daniel Foré on the official blog.

The actual percentages are quite impressive. From the 400,000 users who downloaded elementary OS "Freya," 58,31% have used a Windows system, 32,21% used a Linux OS, and 7,3% used Mac OS X.
