Yet another botched update causing issues on Windows 7

As we reported to you a few hours ago, one of the updates that Microsoft released as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday is again causing issues on a number of Windows computers, this time with Windows 7 believed to be the only version affected.

There are a lot of questions right now and no answers coming from Redmond, so users are all alone in their attempt to find out the cause of the errors they are getting.

The Internet Explorer cumulative update KB3058515 is said to be the cause of the new issues experienced on Windows 7, and according to some of our readers, the update is being offered again and again despite the fact that it’s being displayed as successfully installed on their machines.

“I get the ‘code 80092004’ error, but if I look at the ‘About...’ tab in IE, it shows that KD3058515 is installed. The behavior seems pretty much identical to the KB3038314 error from April/May,” our reader Nonny Mouse told us in a comment.

Just hide the update

Right now, there is no workaround available, but some users recommend to hide the update, especially if it’s listed as successfully installed in Internet Explorer.

Basically, if you’re being re-offered the same update, despite the fact that it’s already installed on your computer, hiding it completely helps you get rid of all the notifications to install it, at least until Microsoft comes up with a fix or pulls the update completely.

To do that in Windows 7, click on Start and go to All Programs > Windows Update. Click on Check for updates, wait for the process to end, hit the View installed updates option, right-click the update you want to hide, in our case KB3058515, and click the entry that reads “Don’t show this update again.”

Keep in mind, however, that hiding an update could leave your computer unpatched in case it didn’t install successfully, and you are strongly recommended to install it again once a revised version is released.
