One more update is causing issues for Windows users

Microsoft rolled out eight security bulletins as part of this month's Patch Tuesday, but it turns out that one of the updates is causing issues on a number of Windows 7 computers.

This time, it seems that KB3058515 is the root of the problems, with some users complaining that installation of this particular patch fails with error code 80092004.

At this point, the small number of reports on this particular error code does not confirm that it's a widespread issue, but we're going to keep an eye on it and let you know whether or not more users are experiencing it.

KB3058515 is a cumulative update for Internet Explorer and is supposed to fix flaws that would otherwise allow attackers to gain the same rights as the logged-in user and thus obtain full control of an unpatched system when an administrator account is being used.

No workaround available

As usual, those affected by the issue turned to all kinds of workarounds, but until now, nothing works and all tricks fail to make any difference. Here's what one of the affected users said on the Microsoft Community forums:

“I tried manually installing update KB3058515 it, but it gave the message 'The update is not applicable to your computer.' I then tried uninstalling IE11, and doing step updates (update IE8 > upgrade to IE9 > update > upgrade to IE10 > update > upgrade to IE11 > update) but I ended up in the same spot.”

Microsoft hasn't yet confirmed any issues with this problem, but we've contacted the company for a word on this and will update this article when we get an answer.

In the meantime, you have no other option than to wait if the standard workarounds don't work for you, but this is quite a risky decision since the KB3058515 update is marked as critical by Microsoft and should be installed by everyone as soon as possible.
