DreamScene is one of the much applauded Microsoft Extras designed specifically for users of Windows Vista Ultimate edition. And although DreamScene cannot be accessed through the Extras website for Windows Vista Ultimate, it is available via WU.

DreamScene is designed to bring the Vista desktop to life, by enabling the use of videos as desktop backgrounds. By default, DreamScene will ship with a variety of high-quality looping videos, but users will also be able to set third-party and even their own videos as backgrounds for Windows Vista Ultimate.

The DreamScene version made available by Microsoft is not the final release. And although the product can be downloaded from peer-to-peer networks, those variants are crawling with malware. "Microsoft is finalizing testing of Windows DreamScene through a Technical Preview phase. The technology preview bits will be made available very soon. Stay tuned for more updates," reads a message posted at the Windows DreamScene section on Vista Ultimate Extras website.

If you are running Windows Vista Ultimate, then you might want to check the updates that are available and download the Technical Preview for DreamScene. You can set up videos as backgrounds much in the same manner as you currently do with pictures.

"Windows Vista Ultimate users may have noticed a nice little surprise today when checking for new Windows updates: the Ultimate Extras Team has released a Technical Preview for Windows DreamScene. This Technical Preview currently includes a single DreamScene -- an animated version of Windows Vista's default wallpaper. You can of course expect more DreamScenes to become available in future releases of Ultimate Extras," revealed Nick White, Microsoft Product Manager.
