Not one of the testers for Windows Server Longhorn Beta 2, but you still want to give what will most likely become Windows Server 2007 a test run? Nothing could be more simple. No, Longhorn
is not available for download outside of the Beta 2 testing pool, but that shouldn't pose a real impediment now should it?
The fact of the matter is that Microsoft is offering Windows Server Codename Longhorn Beta 2 to people that are not among the exclusive group of Beta 2 testers, giving them a taste of the product. "Come experience the next major release of Windows Server! In these Virtual Labs, you'll have the opportunity to test-drive new and improved features and functionality in the upcoming Windows Server "Longhorn" release, including management, network protection and improvements to Terminal Services," reads a Microsoft invite posted on the
TechNet Virtual Lab: Windows Server code name "Longhorn" web page.
Users are welcomed to enter the new Windows Server "Longhorn" virtual lab at no charge and learn to manage Longhorn and Windows Vista via Group Policy, Vista and Longhorn Network Bandwidth with Policy-based Quality of Service, Longhorn Beta 2 Server Core, Longhorn Beta 2 Server Manager and Longhorn Beta 2 Terminal Services Gateway and Remote Programs.
Longhorn is currently on track for Beta 3. A member of the Windows Server Division has confirmed recently that Longhorn development is right on track and going as planned. Longhorn is scheduled for availability in the second half of 2007. In the upcoming 90 days Microsoft will also release the first public milestone for Longhorn, Beta 3.
However, until that time, Longhorn testers still have to look further to another CTP build. Just in time for Christmas 2006, Microsoft made available a CTP for Beta 2 that was followed by another refresh by the February CTP release. The Redmond Company has opened the registration for Longhorn Beta 3 since early December 2006.
