Application compatibility is as much an issue for Windows Server as it is for the Windows client. In this regard, Windows Server 2008 R2 brings to the table changes that can potentially break apps which worked seamlessly on its predecessor. Microsoft is offering developers the necessary resources to tailor their programs to the latest iteration of Windows Server. Phil Pennington, Windows Server Technical Evangelism, is recommending that devs start off with the application readiness portal which the Redmond company has set up for Windows Server 2008 R2.

“Windows Server 2008 R2 includes changes to the kernel and user-mode API’s to support virtualization, scalability, performance, power-management, and networking enhancements. As a result, your existing application may require modifications or design changes, particularly if the application includes kernel drivers,” Pennington explained. “Microsoft provides free test tools and other resources to help you. Benefits include participation in logo programs and global application marketing exposure.”

Noting that it considers application compatibility crucial to the experience of customers running Windows Server 2008 R2, the software giant is inviting developers to take advantage of the ISV Application Readiness and Certification center. The resources available are designed to streamline the work of developers looking to tailor their programs to both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

“Microsoft offers many resources including an application compatibility cookbook, free self test tools, technical specifications for certification and business incentives to help you develop, test, certify and market technically superior applications for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2,” Microsoft added.

Although released to manufacturing concomitantly with Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 was offered to customers much sooner, ahead of the October 22 GA for Windows Vista’s successor. “Microsoft provides free, downloadable test tools and resources to help you: empower your build/test teams with more comprehensive test scenarios in a clear, intuitive Software Certification Toolkit. Test your application’s security, stability, compatibility, reliability and availability in a Windows Server 2008 R2 environment. Improve the user experience by ensuring applications meet the rigorous technical standards of certification before releasing to market,” the company added.
