Many OEMs are moving away from Windows RT, despite Microsoft’s continues efforts in this particular platform, so several sources close to the matter suggested that Redmond might after all merge its tablet-oriented operating system with Windows Phone.

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs tech conference this month, Tami Reller, Microsoft’s executive vice president, Marketing, suggested that was indeed possible, but only talked vaguely about a project that would mix Windows RT and Windows Phone.

“Terry Myerson and the OS group are really looking at how we make sure we've got a world-class mobile operating system moving forward, and what will that mean for our tablet and mobile strategy,” she said, according to WinSuperSite. “I think there's a lot of opportunities to do some things there that take that forward in an interesting way.”

Recent leaks have suggested that Microsoft might be working on so-called universal apps that would work on both platforms and help the company bring them together. The upcoming Windows 8.1 Update 1 and Windows 9 are expected to make some significant changes in this regard.
