Windows Phone users are probably used by now with the fact that they receive 7GB of cloud storage for free when they sign up for a SkyDrive account. This service is available for free and acts as a file manager, but in the cloud, something that's been missing from the Windows Phone platform since forever.

Although there are rumors Microsoft plans to bring this functionality (file manager) in the next major upgrade for Windows Phone, those who are already using a smartphone powered by this platform can only wait and see it these rumors are true.

Until then, SkyDrive is a good and safe way to store your photos, documents or other files, and comes in handy especially when you lost your phone or it gets stolen.

Liveside.net reports Microsoft is now offering Windows Phone users more cloud storage for free. No less than 20GB of SkyDrive cloud storage are now available for free, aside from the 7GB which are already offered for free when you sign up for the service.

The catch is the new 20GB of free cloud storage is only available for one year, after which you will have to pay a certain amount to continue to use it. Here is an excerpt from the letter some Windows Phone users received in their mailboxes:

“To show our appreciation of Windows Phone customers, we are giving you an extra 20 GB of free SkyDrive storage for one year. This is in addition to the 7 GB of free SkyDrive storage that all customers currently have.

SkyDrive is built into your Windows Phone. It’s personal online storage that you can access – along with the photos and files you save there – at SkyDrive.com from any Internet-enabled device, and through the SkyDrive mobile app.”

Unfortunately, there's no telling whether or not this offer is only available in the United States. Stay tuned as we get more details on Microsoft's present for Windows Phone users.
