On Monday, Microsoft announced the availability of an update

for handsets running under its new Windows Phone 7 operating system, a minor software bump, aimed at making things smoother for the release of the next updates for the platform.

However, while most users were able to update their devices, some encountered various issues with the installation, among which we can count unresponsive handsets, or the impossibility to complete the update process.

Most reports suggested that Samsung's Omnia 7 and Focus handsets were those affected by these problems.

We initially reported that the main issue that users were confronted with included the update process being stuck at Step 7, but it seems that other problems were signaled as well.

Some users saw their phones bricked, with a error message in the Zune software informing them that the device cannot be restored to the latest software restore point.

According to Microsoft, users can revive their devices through disconnecting them from the desktop PC, pulling the battery off, putting the battery and the battery cover back, and powering the phone on.

At this point, the smartphone should reboot into the OSKernal, and users would be able to continue using it.

However, Microsoft also advises users that they should not try to continue with the installation of the software update, as the process is expected to fail again.

“While we continue to investigate the issue, we would ask that you not attempt the update until your device alerts you of another update opportunity, in approximately 3 days' time,” the company stated, a recent article on the unwired reads.

Provided that this fix fails, users should try hard resetting their devices as the last option. The product documentation is the place where they would find more info on this.

Hopefully, the company would indeed manage to find the underlying issue with this update for Windows Phone devices, and would provide an actual fix for it in the near future.
