Windows Phone owners out there should start enjoying a series of new features on their smartphones starting with today, as Redmond-based software giant Microsoft pushed out the first update for the new mobile operating system.

Unfortunately, this is only a minor update, and not the software that we've been talking about for the past couple of months, and which would be codenamed ‘NoDo’.

For those out of the loop, we should note that the update was expected to bring copy and paste to Windows Phone, along with other enhancements.

Microsoft already confirmed the near availability of that OS upgrade, and also announced the release of the new software, which is said to be a relatively small one.

“This first update for Windows Phone is designed to improve the software update process itself,” Microsoft's Michael Stroh notes in a post on the Windows Phone Blog.

“So while it might not sound exciting, it’s still important because it’s paving the way for all future goodie-filled updates to your phone, such as copy and paste or improved Marketplace search,” he continues.

The new software update started arriving on smartphones on Monday, and should roll out over the next days to all users. Microsoft says that all Windows Phone owners should receive it as quick as possible.

Windows Phone owners would receive a message when the update is available for their handsets, the said blog post continues.

In order to update the phone, users would have to connect it to a Windows computer and install it via the Zune software for PC, or to a Mac, using the Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac.

“So just install one of these programs, connect your phone to your computer via the USB cable, and then follow the on-screen instructions. I also strongly encourage you to check out our step-by-step guide for updating your phone on the Windows Phone website,” Michael Stroh states.

He also encourages users to update Zune software or the Windows Phone 7 Connector, in case they installed the program in the past, to make sure they have the latest version available.

The update process should not be a complicated one. However, in case users might like to learn more on what updating a phone is all about, they should head over to this page on Microsoft's website to learn more on the matter.
