Even though Windows Phone is the third major mobile platform, it sits at around 3% market share, which extremely low for a company like Microsoft.

Things weren't better in the last few years and analysts predict that the situation will only slightly improve in the coming years.

However, a 2% increase in market share means almost nothing, except if you get that each year for at least 4-5 years.

While we don't really know what will happen in the future since we don't own a crystal ball, the folks over at IDC claim they know better since they have all the info that would allow them to predict things.

According to their latest smartphone forecast by OS, shipments and market share, Windows Phone will be in no position to challenge either iOS or Android for a better ranking. Not even in 4 years from now.

Android and iOS lose market share, but only slightly

It looks like IDC predicts Windows Phone market share will increase to 5.4% in 2019, a 2.2% rise from the current 3.2% market share that the operating system is credited with.

Furthermore, the amount of Windows Phone handsets will increase as well from 46.8 million in 2015 to more than 103 million units in 2019.

The other two OSes, Android and iOS will lose some market share due to Windows Phone's slight increase, but the numbers are negligible.

Since these are just forecasts, we can't confirm nor deny that IDC got it right, but smartphone users should feel free to comment on these numbers.

One thing is certain, Microsoft will have a hard time increasing Windows Phone's market share and if the company doesn't manage to do that soon after Windows 10 gets released, it will become harder and harder.

Let's see how Windows 10 Mobile turns out and what devices Microsoft releases this year and then think about market share.
