Microsoft's efforts to increase Windows Phone's market share are paying off in the United Kingdom, where the mobile platform is quickly gaining traction and has recently reached a new record.

A total of 3.3 million users in the United Kingdom are running Windows Phone on their devices, which means that Microsoft now holds a 8.5 percent market share, up from 6.5 percent last year.

This figures have been published by The Guardian following a research conducted by eMarketer for the United Kingdom market and involving all the other mobile platforms, including iOS and Android.

Android currently has a market share of 56.2 percent in the United Kingdom and a total number of users of 21.5 million, so it's pretty clear that Windows Phone still has a very long way to go to compete with its rivals. Android increased from 18.3 percent in 2014 and from 15.5 percent in 2013, so there's no doubt that its growth won't stop here.

As far as iOS is concerned, an important market share boost has also been recorded here, with its share increased from 30.5 percent in 2014 to 32.2 percent in 2015. A total of 12.3 million users are currently on an iPhone, stats show.

Windows Phone still more popular than BlackBerry

The fight for the third place in the smartphone market still takes place between Windows Phone and Blackberry, but Microsoft's platform appears to be winning.

While Windows Phone has a share of 8.5 percent in the UK, BlackBerry is doing poorly. The Canadian phone manufacturer has a 1.9 percent market share in the country, so only 0.7 million people are currently using its devices.

As far as Windows Phone is concerned, Microsoft has big expectations in the next few months, as the company is now working to bring Windows 10 for phones to the market and update all its devices to this new version.

High-end devices running Windows 10 are also expected, most likely later in 2015, so its UK market share could be significantly increased if the new devices and operating system are exactly what customers expect to get.
