Lumia 1020 and other handsets powered by it should no longer be affected

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system was found a while ago to be suffering from a strange issue, which resulted in the phone’s internal memory being eaten up by cached data from email, games, videos, documents, images and the like, but it seems that an upcoming OS upgrade will resolve it.

In fact, the latest smartphones to have landed on shelves with Microsoft’s mobile platform loaded on top, such as the Lumia 925 and Lumia 1020, both powered by Windows Phone 8 GDR2 (General Distribution Release 2), should no longer be affected.

The info comes from Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore himself, who posted on Twitter that “non-deleted large files (XAPs, eg) that caused 'other' storage issues were fixed in GDR2.”

This means that the problem will be resolved on all other Windows Phone 8 handsets, as soon as it arrives on them. As WPCentral notes, however, Lumia 1020 users might not be aware of the issue even if it was still there, since they have about 22GB of internal memory at their disposal on the phone.
