This summer, owners of Nokia Lumia smartphones out there will be able to enjoy a nice range of new features and capabilities on their devices, courtesy of the brand-new Windows Phone 8.1 operating system update that went official yesterday.

According to Nokia, the update will provide users with much more entertainment, productivity, and functionality, regardless of the smartphone they own.

Those with a Nokia Lumia 1020, for example, will be able to take advantage of new imaging enhancements built into Windows Phone 8.1, which will bode perfectly with the 41MP PureView camera with ZEISS optics available on this device.

The platform update will come with a better Creative Studio, which should offer an improved post-editing experience.

“A new high-resolution reframing feature means you can zoom into more details and reposition the image until you find the perfect angle,” a recent post on Nokia Conversations explains.

Just as before, the great zooming capabilities that Nokia Lumia 1020 comes with will enable users to see things that they didn’t even know that were there when snapping a photo.

At the same time, the update will arrive on smartphones with an integrated camera roll, which will also provide users with lightning-fast full-megapixel zoom, Nokia explains.

On top of that, there are the various new personalization options that Windows Phone 8.1 will bring to the Start Screen, which include the option to have much more Live Tiles displayed on the screen than before.

“The 4.5 inch HD screen real estate on the Nokia Lumia 1020 is already vast, so just imagine the potential now. It means that you can fit more of your favourite apps, games, web bookmarks or people right onto one screen,” the aforementioned blog post notes.

Moreover, Windows Phone 8.1 will enable users to easily set a custom Start screen background, regardless of the image they want to have displayed there, and won’t see just as white or black background, as before.

These images will be visible through the system tiles, which will make the Start screen look much better than before, while also offering a more personal experience.

There is also the Nokia Rich Recording feature, that will allow users to record better audio for their videos when pairing it with Dolby Surround Sound Capturing, and which will be available in Windows Phone 8.1 in Nokia Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon.

The Windows Phone 8.1 update will be delivered to Nokia Lumia users over-the-air and is expected to land on all devices running under Windows Phone 8.
