One of the features that the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 operating system is expected to bring is the ability to attach arbitrary files to emails, something that third-party developers will be able to take advantage of, it seems.

The functionality was rumored before to be en route to the OS, yet no specific confirmation on the matter has been provided as of now.

However, more info on the matter has been offered via the description of a session dedicated to Windows Phone 8.1 at this year’s BUILD conference.

As WMPoweruser notes, Windows Phone 8 can make it rather difficult to share files from the smartphone, but the soon to come Windows Phone 8.1 appears set to address this shortcoming.

In the aforementioned session description, Microsoft explains that user data is at the core of developing personal experiences on mobile devices, and that new APIs for managing user data will be available in WP 8.1.

The session will provide info on these APIs, as well as on system UI tools that deliver efficiency on smartphones, and will also explain how devs can integrate said data with their platforms.

“The specific data types that fall into these themes are Contacts, Appointments, Email, and Online Media. Among other scenarios, the session will cover attaching arbitrary files to emails and writing appointments into the user’s calendar,” said description continues.
