While all eyes are on Windows 10 for phones and the features it could bring to the market, more people are upgrading to Windows Phone 8.1 to benefit from all improvements that Microsoft is offering as part of this release, including live folders and Cortana.

And according to AdDuplex data, the Windows Phone 8.1 adoption is going so well that this particular OS version is now powering 67.7 percent of all Windows Phone devices.

What's more encouraging is that Windows 10 for phones also made the very first appearance in these stats, as it's now powering 0.2 percent of the devices. While this isn't much, let's not forget that Windows 10 for phones is still in development and Microsoft says that only experienced users and those with a secondary device should install it.

Windows Phone 8 fading out

While Windows Phone 8.1 is gaining traction, older releases such as Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 are slowly losing users and it's easy to see why. They're pretty much old and lack the capabilities of Windows Phone 8.1, so the same migration trend is very likely to be maintained in the coming months as well.

Right now, Windows Phone 8 is powering 21.3 percent of the devices, while Windows Phone 7.x has a WP share of 10.8 percent.

As far as Windows Phone manufacturers are concerned, Microsoft continues to keep the leading place with a share of 96 percent, followed by HTC with 2.28 percent. Samsung is third with 0.90 percent, but its share could get a huge boost very soon, as the company could launch new devices running Windows 10 later this year.

In case you're interesting to see Windows Phone's share in top markets, things haven't changed too much and Lumia 520 continues to be leading model worldwide with 23.2 percent. Lumia 630 comes next with 9.7 percent, followed by Lumia 625 with 7.1 percent.

In the United States, Lumia 521 is still number one with 17.3 percent, followed by Lumia 635 with 17.2 percent and Lumia 520 with 10.5 percent. The good thing is that in the United States the flagship Lumia 1520 is also making an appearance with a 3 percent share, so Americans might in the end dump their iPhones for Windows Phone devices too.

Overall, Windows Phone adoption is going well across the world, but it all depends on how Microsoft plays its card with Windows 10. The company should launch new Windows Phone models at MWC 2015 next week, so expect a really busy month for Microsoft in the mobile industry.
