Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 has been spotted again in documentation that seems to confirm its existence, despite reports claiming that Microsoft stopped development of this new release.

According to a report published by WMPowerUser, Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 references have been again spotted in documentation published by the Bluetooth SIG, after previously getting removed from the website all of a sudden.

These new references point to features such as Bluetooth HID support, which just as its name suggests, would allow users to connect a wide array of new devices with Bluetooth, including keyboards and other accessories.

It could be launched later this year

Work on Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 hasn’t been officially confirmed by Microsoft until now, but people close to the matter said that the company decided to pull the plug on this project and focus entirely on Windows Phone 10 and its feature lineup.

As a result, all features that were initially projected to be included in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 would be implemented in Windows Phone 10, thus making the new release even more appealing to users worldwide.

But as far as Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 is concerned, it appears that Microsoft is still interested in rolling it out sometime this year, before the actually release of WP10 scheduled to take place in the fall of 2015.

According to the SIG listing, this update comes with plenty of improvements.

“The second major update to WIndows Phone 8.1 expands the range of hardware options while simultaneously opening up the developer experience that enables even more fantastic apps. From the Bluetooth perspective, Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 adds MAP, HID 1.1, HOGP and Absolute Volume Control support,” the listing reads.

Obviously, the project is still in doubt and nobody can tell for sure if Microsoft is indeed still planning to release this update, but the company could set things straight at the upcoming January 21 event, when Windows Phone news is also expected to be shared.
