Microsoft has just released a new version of Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview, which brings new features and improvements. Along with it, build 10051 also adds support for more Lumia smartphones.

However, there are some issues that prevent users who have build 9941 installed to upgrade to this version of Windows 10 for Phones, so they will have to use the Windows Phone Recovery Tool in order to downgrade to Windows Phone 8.1.

Now it looks like Microsoft is doing something else in order to let some users install Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview build 10051.

According to WMPoweruser, many Lumia users who try to upgrade to the latest Windows 10 for Phones build are now getting Windows 8.1 Update 2.

Microsoft initially said that this update won't be released to Lumia smartphones and this version of the OS will only be available on Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL, which have been recently launched on the market.

The update is needed in order to upgrade to Windows 10 for Phones build 10051

A few days ago, the Redmond-based company backtracked on its initial statement and stated that at least two devices, Lumia 830 and Lumia 735 will be getting Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 in the coming weeks.

Today, Microsoft's Gabe Aul confirmed that they had to bring up the baseline to Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, so that owners can upgrade to Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview build 10051.

For the time being, there have been reports of Lumia 925 and Lumia 1520 users who have received Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, while trying to upgrade to Windows 10 build 10051.

So, along with the new features and improvements included in Windows 10 for Phones, some users will also be getting some of the new stuff available in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2.

Keep in mind that you can't force Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 to arrive on your smartphone unless you plan on upgrading to Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview build 10051.
