Bad news for the HTC 8S owners who are still waiting for Microsoft to resume the rollout of Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, as the Taiwanese handset maker has just issued an official statement confirming that the update will never arrive on this particular smartphone.

It looks like HTC has finally decided to communicate with Windows Phone fans who own 8X and 8S devices and let them know why the Update 1 is still not available for their handsets.

In case you are one of these users and have no idea what’s going on, here is a quick recap. Microsoft has started to roll out the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 to Developer Preview phones on Monday, but HTC 8X and 8S owners were not able to download and install the update for some reason.

Microsoft and HTC acknowledged the issue and confirmed they were working on a fix, but they did not offer any additional details on what exactly was causing the problem for the 8X and 8S users.

In the meantime, the rollout of Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for HTC 8X and 8S has been halted until a fix is released. Unfortunately, the problems seem to be worse than Microsoft and HTC have originally thought, which is why the Taiwanese company decided to come forward with an official statement that would clarify the situation.

According to this statement posted on HTC’s official forums, the HTC 8S will never receive Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 due to the fact that it does not meet the hardware requirements.

On the other hand, the update for HTC 8X is still in testing and its deployment will resume once the process is successful. Here is HTC’s official statement translated from Chinese:

“R & D department matters after HTC and Microsoft repeatedly communicate about HTC 8X / 8S upgrade Windows Phone 8.1 Update developer preview version now follows notification:

HTC 8X will be the first time after time push notification system testing stable, while HTC 8S due to some hardware upgrades do not meet the criteria, this will not be upgraded, hope you are using HTC 8S friends can understand. For more information please timely official micro-blog users to focus on information, thank you for the user has been support for HTC, thank you!”

Even though HTC is not 100% clear when it comes to the reason behind the cancelation of the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for 8S, we suspect it has something to do with the low amount of storage (4GB). The good news is the 8X is still in the cards for an OS upgrade, so stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
