Windows Phone 8.1 has started to arrive on existing Windows Phone 8 devices out there this week, and it seems that Microsoft is also speeding up the development of the first update for the new platform iteration.

Supposedly set to arrive on devices as Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 or Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1, the upcoming OS flavor has already started to emerge online, and a new build number supposedly belonging to it has been noticed in WPBench.

Apparently, Microsoft has bumped the OS up to build number 8.10.14140.0, which is supposedly only a small update over the previously spotted iteration (8.10.14130.0).

As Nokiapoweruser notes, the upcoming platform update might have already reached RTM status, which means that it is already being tested for deployment.

At the moment, Windows Phone 8.1 devices are running under build version 8.10.12397.895, which clearly shows that the new software flavor is a completely new branch, set to make an official appearance at a later date.

Microsoft has been rumored to be working on Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 for quite some time now, and it is said to be planning on releasing it sometime in mid-August, yet no official confirmation on the matter has been provided as of now.

The update should come to devices with a nice set of new features, including native folder support, and might be officially announced in the following several weeks, so keep an eye on this space for more on the matter.
