If you’re the owner of a Windows Phone 8 handset, you’d better switch to 8.1 as soon as possible because very soon you might be the only one using the old smartphone operating system version.

Data provided by market researcher AdDuplex for the month of October reveals that Windows Phone 8.1 now has more users than its predecessors, mostly because the update is available on a bigger number of handsets, so there’s pretty much no reason not to upgrade.

At this point, Windows Phone 8.1 has a market share of 46.7 percent on the Windows Phone market, while the standard version 8 is powering 36.8 percent of the phones.

What’s more surprising is that Windows Phone 7.x continues to be installed on 16.6 percent of the smartphones, and according to AdDuplex, this particular OS version experienced a 1.4 percent market share increase as compared to the last month.

Lumia 520 still leads the pack

As far as the most popular Windows Phones on the market are concerned, there’s no surprise that Lumia 520 continues to be number one with a share of 26.9 percent. Lumia 625 is second with 7.2 percent, while Lumia 630 is third with 6.4 percent.

The only non-Lumia phone that’s in the top is the HTC 8S, which, according to these statistics, has a Windows Phone market share of 3.5 percent in the United Kingdom.

And still, things aren’t going really well for Microsoft’s entry-level phone Lumia 520, as AdDuplex says that, as compared to the previous month, this particular handset dropped 3.7 percent.

Samsung ATIV S going strong in Germany

As far as Europe is concerned, the Lumia 520 continue to be the best-selling device, and according to the very same statistics, it’s very likely to remain the leader for the next few months as well.

In Germany, for example, Lumia 520 is the number one Windows Phone device with 13.3 percent of the market, followed by Lumia 630 and 920 with 11.9 and 11.4 percent, respectively.

Surprisingly, Germany is a market that’s not entirely dominated by Lumia, as the Samsung ATIV S is also going strong in the country and selling in quite big numbers. Samsung’s device has a market share of 5.4 percent, ahead of devices such as Lumia 1020 and Lumia 930.

And still, there’s no doubt that Microsoft remains the main player on the Windows Phone market, and its devices, still branded as Nokia, continue to attract the most buyers.
