One of the features that owners of Windows Phone 8.1 devices out there have been requesting for their smartphones, but which hasn’t been included in the operating system as of now, is a file manager, one that has been officially confirmed for the next month.

In a recent post on Windows Phone UserVoice, Microsoft has officially confirmed that a file manager will arrive as soon as June, though it did not provide a more specific release date as of now.

However, the company did unveil that the app would be called Files, and that users would be able to download and install it via the Windows Phone Store portal.

Undoubtedly, this will sound like great news for all Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 users out there (the former will enjoy an upgrade to the newer OS version soon, which means that the file manager will be available for them as well).

“In June, we will be launching a great file manager app for Windows Phone 8.1 called ‘Files’ … just look for it in the Store then,” Microsoft said on the aforementioned post on Windows Phone UserVoice.

For those out of the loop, we should also note that Microsoft did say earlier this month that a file manager would be available for Windows Phone 8.1 in May. However, as WPCentral notes, it seems that the company had to delay the release of the application.

In addition to making the aforementioned announcement, Microsoft also marked the thread on Windows Phone UserVoice as completed, which clearly shows that the development team is almost there with the release of this application.

What remains to be seen is when exactly the application will arrive in the Windows Phone Store, and what specific features it will have to offer to users when made available.

Microsoft has been hard at work adding new capabilities to its mobile operating system lately, and it will certainly release more of them in the not too distant future, so as to provide users with an even better experience than before.

Windows Phone 8.1 is available for download at the moment as a Developer Preview, but it will land in a final version later this summer, most probably as soon as the next month.

The first handset running under the OS right from the start has also arrived on shelves, in the form of Nokia Lumia 630, and more of these will be available soon, starting with the Lumia 930, which is also expected to be released in June.
