Files, the official file manager for Windows Phone, was released less than two weeks ago in Windows Phone Store and it slowly build its way up to the top of the most downloaded free applications.

Along with Facebook and Messenger, Files is one of the most downloaded Windows Phone applications in the store, which says something about the need of a file manager for Microsoft’s mobile operating system.

Despite the fact that there are still Windows Phone fans who are not that enthusiastic about Microsoft releasing a file manager, the application seems to have pleased users.

Files has almost 4,000 user reviews in the Windows Phone Store and most of them are rated with 4 or 5 stars, which says a lot about the quality of the application built by Microsoft.

Windows Phone users have been complaining about the lack of a file manager since the release of Windows Phone 7 back in 2010. Well, it looks like it took Microsoft no less than 4 years to bring the much requested feature to Windows Phone.

It’s unclear why it took the Redmond-based company so long to build a file manager for its mobile platform, but maybe Microsoft did not consider it the right time for releasing such a feature until recently.

Perhaps Windows Phone had some limitations that made it impossible for Microsoft to develop a dedicated file manager for the mobile operating system.

The latter seems more like it, especially due to the fact that Files, the new file manager launched by Microsoft on May 30, is only compatible with Windows Phone 8.1 devices.

Speaking of which, Files for Windows Phone offers similar features to many other unofficial file managers available on Store, including access files stored either on the phone’s memory or on SD card.

Windows Phone enthusiasts can also use Files to browse, search and launch files directly within the file manager. Users can also share one or multiple files via the new file manager, or even create folders to organize all the files. You can also copy, move, rename and delete files as you wish.

The fact that Files, the official Windows Phone file manager launched by Microsoft is a top free app should not surprise anyone considering how long users have been waiting for this application.

It will be interesting to see how fast the file manager will be improved via update. The only update received by Files dates back to June 2, but there’s no official changelog for it, so there’s no telling what it brought.

You can download Files for Windows Phone for free via Windows Phone Store. The application is fully compatible with all devices powered by Windows Phone 8.1 and up.
