Windows Phone 7, the mobile operating system that Redmond-based software giant Microsoft announced officially last year at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, is getting ready to tastes its first update, after hitting the shelves in October last year.

The company already announced officially that it would make the software available for Windows Phone 7 devices in the coming weeks, but some of the latest rumors on it suggest that February 7th would actually be the lucky day for that.

The said software update should bring some appealing features into the mix, including copy and paste functionality, as well as improved performance for applications and games, along with fixes for a series of issues that the platform was already reported to come to the market with.

Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn't confirmed a specific release date for the update, although there have been some suggesting that it would actually be released before February, since it was called the January update.

That did not pan out, and new rumors emerged, pointing at a possible February 7th availability for the software.

Moreover, as WinRumors reports, a recently published support post on Microsoft's website also suggested that the release of this OS update would be imminent, and next Monday might be lucky day for Windows Phone 7 users.

According to the news site, while the release date might not be 100% accurate, the fact that Microsoft already Released to Manufacturing (RTM) its first update codenamed “NoDo” was confirmed, which means that the software should be pushed to users soon.

Undoubtedly, those who will rejoice receiving the software update will be many, as though not in excess of 2 million, even if Microsoft announced that it managed to sell over 2 million Windows Phone 7 licenses to manufacturers.

Hopefully, the software update will indeed arrive in a week's time, though we'll take this with a grain of salt for the time being.
