Windows Phone 7, the latest mobile operating system version that Redmond-based Microsoft brought to the market this year, is about to get much better than at the moment, it seems.

Reportedly, Microsoft plans the release of an OS upgrade no later than January, an update that would be massive, some of the latest reports around the Internet suggest.

We already knew that the Windows Phone 7 platform is set to receive an update in the near future, and Microsoft themselves confirmed the near availability of such a solution, but it seems that things are actually much better than expected.

Developer Chris Walsh has just posted on his Twitter account that the update would indeed be a massive one, bringing the mobile platform to a whole new level.

According to Chris Walsh, “MS took 3 months to do what Apple did in 3 years.” Moreover, he states that “they could have called it Windows Phone 8.”

Whether true or not, it remains to be seen when an official announcement on the matter is made, or the software itself starts arriving on devices.

Some of the main enhancements that it should bring include Copy and Paste capabilities, along with multi-tasking functionality, though it's not clear what this would actually be all about.

According to a recent article on WPCentral, we should also expect for Bing Maps on Windows Phone 7 to get turn-by-turn directions, along with other improvements (most probably aimed at the other Bing services too).

Custom ringer support would also be included into the mix, and other improvements as well, though specific info on them lacks at the moment.

The news site also suggests that, while there is no confirmation on what exactly would the software update include, it should impress when released in early 2011.

More details on this are expected to become available in the near future, along with a series of screenshots that might show more on what the update is all about, so stay tuned.
