Windows Phone 7 users should soon have the opportunity to enjoy a new official Foursquare application available for them, Microsoft confirmed recently.

For the time being, however, no specific info on when would the application become available emerged, but the one thing that is certain is that the software will indeed be released into the wild.

Confirmation on the matter comes from Liz Ngo, from the Global ISV Group at Microsoft Corporation, via a recent post on MSDN.

“I am here to give a special shout out to our friends from both the foursquare and Windows Phone communities. Over the last year, we have discovered and learned from many of you that Windows Phone 7 is a great leap for Microsoft,” the said blog post reads.

“In the spirit of this, foursquare will soon unveil a new foursquare mobile app that will take advantage of some of the unique capabilities, features, and experience for Windows Phone 7.”

Until the new mobile application becomes available for download for Windows Phone 7 users out there, another software is available for those interested in benefiting from foursquare features.

“Until then, we encourage you to explore a great foursquare application, built by a 3rd party developer, called 4th and Mayor. It includes rich functionality like photos, comments, new leaderboards, the Explore feature,” the blog post reads.

The said mobile application is available for download via https://foursquare.com/apps/ (one would have to click on the Windows Phone logo in the upper right corner of the page).

For those out of the loop, we should note that Foursquare was launched as a location-based mobile platform aimed at making the exploring of cities a more fun activity. It already has a number of over 8 million users worldwide.

Foursquare users can check in via a smartphone app or SMS, so as to share their location with friends, and to collect points and virtual badges.

“Foursquare guides real-world experiences by allowing users to bookmark information about venues that they want to visit and surfacing relevant suggestions about nearby venues,” the company explains.

“Merchants and brands leverage the foursquare platform by utilizing a wide set of tools to obtain, engage, and retain customers and audiences.”
