Redmond-based software giant Microsoft is reportedly planning the unveiling of its next-generation Windows Mobile 7 operating system at the Mobile World Congress which kicked off in Barcelona today, and should also announce some of the first devices to come to the market running under the platform. What these devices are all about, it is still unknown, although a great deal of rumors on them emerged already, but it seems that we have a name for them all, namely Windows Phone 7 Series.

For the time being, no specific info on what the “Series” part in the name is all about emerged, but all hopes are that a full explanation should be provided later today, during Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer's speech at the MWC 2010 show. According to the guys over at Engadget, who unveiled the Series part in the Windows Phone 7 logo, the previous rumors on two types of devices, one aimed at consumers and one at business users, might actually pan out.

On way or the other, we should wait for the official announcement to see what this is all about, but we can still have a look at other interesting details on Windows Mobile, which surfaced via Zdnet. The news site notes that Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone Engineering Terry Myerson is now said to be the head of a team that works on “the software at the heart of Windows Phones and Zune devices, including the user interface, applications, supporting web services, and the operating system.”

This is something that further confirms the fact that future handsets running under Microsoft's next-gen mobile client are to include support for Zune services, one should agree. And the same applies to another piece of info, regarding Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president in charge of Windows Phone Program Management, who is also responsible for “the design and software product definition of forthcoming generations of Windows phones and Zune devices,” and which Zdnet says that will hold a keynote at the MIX10 conference in March.
