Windows Phone 7, the latest mobile operating system flavor that Microsoft brought to the market last year, is now available for users of a HTC HD2 device too, via a custom ROM released for them.

Last year, when Redmond-based software giant Microsoft announced officially the launch of Windows Phone 7, rumors on the possible arrival of this OS flavor on HTC HD2 also emerged, but they were all put to a rest soon after, when Microsoft stated officially that there will be no backwards compatibility in the new OS version.

However, it seems that the new mobile platform arrived on the HTC HD2 too, even if in an unofficial manner, and that those owners of the device who would like to install it have the possibility to do so.

The new release allows users to take advantage of a series of phone functions there, including call answer, dial, sending and receiving SMS messages, Bluetooth, WiFi, and the like.

Moreover, those who delivered the software report that, among the other features that work on this device, users would enjoy syncing with Zune, the phone's camera and accelerometer, the Internet Explorer and calendar, and others more.

However, the OS and HD2 won't match perfectly as of yet, and there still are a series of functionalities of the handset that won't work, but which might be solved in the not too far future.

Before heading to to DFT here, or to this thread on XDA-Developers to learn more on the release, you might want to check the videos embedded at the bottom of this article, just top make an idea of how HD2 runs under Windows Phone 7.

Also, keep in mind that this is not an official release, and that you will be installing it on HD2 at your own risk. In case you are not familiar with what the installation of custom ROMs is all about, it might be a good idea to refrain from trying this one out.
