Developers building games designed to work on Windows Phone 7 might want to have a look at a PowerPoint presentation offered by Microsoft free of charge designed to help them get the best performance possible out of their projects.

Considering the limited hardware resources available in smartphones today, it’s critical for all applications, games included, to deliver the best user experience possible.

And there’s nothing ruining user experience like slow speed, lags, freezes, and other glitches inherently related to poor performance.

As with a variety of other development tasks, the Redmond company has set up a collection of best practices designed to ensure top performance for games running on top of Windows Phone 7.

Of course, developers should not expect a single resource to provide answers to all their performance questions, but “Windows Phone 7 Performance Best Practices” overview is as good a place as any to start when looking for guidance on how to improve the speed of Windows Phone 7 games.

“From a performance point of view, writing managed code can sometimes feel abstracted from the hardware. Learn how .NET and XNA Game Studio put your application together and what is going on between your code and the metal, how IL and the JITter work, and where the managed environment may impact your performance,” Microsoft stated.

“Find out how to double-check your performance hunches by using assembly metadata, examining intermediate language, and tracking what the framework is doing.

“Learn how to use real-world analysis and optimization techniques to bring all of this knowledge together and tackle common performance pitfalls in your title. All of the topics in the presentation are related to real-life Windows Phone 7 programming situations.”

The Windows Phone 7 Performance Best Practices is available for free via the Microsoft Download Center.
