A beta ROM might arrive soon

HTC HD2, the hottest mobile phone released on the market running under Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, has finally got its share of Windows Phone 7 OS. The upcoming mobile operating system has been ported to the device, and, although not all works as smooth as it should, this is the sign that HTC HD2 can run under the latest platform from the Redmond-based software company.

It's a common fact that Microsoft already announced officially that no Windows Mobile 6.5-based device would be upgraded to the new Windows Phone 7 Series, HTC HD2 included, yet we all expected for the OS to be brought to the highly-appealing handset that's for sure. The news on the port was brought by Tom Codon from HTCPedia, who also posted a series of photos with the HD2 running under Windows Phone 7 OS.

According to him, almost all of its features are working, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, though it seems that the graphic driver has some issues at the moment, and that the device is luggy due to that. However, the work on this will continue, and there are great chances that a beta version of the ROM will emerge into the wild in the near future.

When announcing that no Windows Mobile 6.5-based handset will enjoy the new OS, Microsoft said that this was due to strict hardware specifications it had put in place for the upcoming mobile platform. To be more specific, the future Windows Phone 7 Series devices will come with only three buttons on the front, while HD2 includes five buttons under the screen. And it seems that this was some sort of a problem with the porting too, yet Tom Codon says that two buttons on HD2 work as Start and Back functions, and that the Home button will soon be assigned to the Search function.

Take a look at the two videos below to see HD2 running under Windows Phone 7 OS. For what it's worth, the fact that the new platform has been ported to the older device comes as great news for enthusiasts, especially since the phone has just made its debut on the US market. HD2 already proved successful on T-Mobile USA's airwaves, and the emergence of a Windows Phone 7 ROM for it will make it even more appealing, that's for sure.
