Australian wireless carrier Vodafone has announced earlier this week the availability of the Windows Phone 7.8 software update for its Nokia Lumia 610 and Lumia 800 smartphones.

This is the update that Nokia and Microsoft announced as available starting with January 30, and which has already arrived on devices in various markets around the world.

Following the update, users will enjoy both a series of performance improvements on their devices and brand new features from both Microsoft and Nokia.

“On the 31st of January 2013, Microsoft began rolling out the Windows Phone 7.8 product release 2.0 software update for the Nokia Lumia 610,” Vodafone notes on its support website.

On Nokia Lumia 800, the new OS flavor will arrive as “Windows Phone 7.8 product release 3.0 software update,” the wireless carrier also says.

Shortly after starting to deliver the update to users, Microsoft also published the full changelog for it, confirming not only start screen and lock screen enhancements, but various other improvements as well.

Vodafone customers who own one of the aforementioned devices and would like to update it to the new OS release will be able to do so both through Zune and Windows Phone Connector for Mac.

The update will arrive on shelves with OS version 7.10.8858.136 attached, and is being delivered free of charge, Vodafone notes.

However, the carrier also explains that this is a staged update, which means that some of its users will have to wait a bit longer before it arrives on their handsets.

25 percent of Lumia 610 and Lumia 800 users should receive the update by February 3, Vodafone notes, adding that all of them will receive it by February 18.

Those who would like to learn more on the update, should head to this page if they own a Lumia 610, or to this one if they have a Lumia 800 in their hands.
