Development of Windows Phone 10 has already started, so Microsoft is currently working on both the desktop and the smartphone operating systems, but details are still missing on the latter.

One of the biggest changes that could take place in the next version of Windows Phone is the introduction of a new name, which is supposed to help Microsoft not only capitalize on the Windows popularity more effectively but also bring more users on board to better compete with Android and iOS.

A new report coming via Brad Sams of Neowin claims that Windows Phone 10 could be called “Windows 10 Mobile” and this particular designation is already being used in the testing versions of the operating system that were submitted to partners a few weeks ago.

Why Windows 10 Mobile makes sense

Back in the fall of 2014, a couple of videos released by Microsoft referred to Windows Phone as just “Windows,” making everyone believe that the company could call the smartphone platform the same as the desktop sibling.

Obviously, calling Windows Phone just “Windows” would be a very risky decision because this could create even more confusion among users, especially when taking into account the criticism created after the launch of Windows 8.

And yet, it appears that Microsoft might be going for “Windows 10 Mobile,” which is a much better and logical choice for everyone.

First and foremost, with this name, the company could shoot two birds with one stone: it easily uses the Windows moniker to bring in more users, but at the same time, it also flags it as “Mobile” to be obvious enough that it was designed to run on smartphones.

More info in two weeks

Even though details on Windows 10 Mobile are missing right now, Microsoft is expected to share more information at the January 21 event in Redmond.

At that conference, Microsoft will be talking about the consumer experience on Windows 10, but the same event is very likely to witness the first public unveiling of an early Windows 10 Mobile build.

What’s more, the company could also talk about its next Windows 10 browser called Spartan and which could be offered in the upcoming operating system together with Internet Explorer.
