After announcing the brand new Windows 10 for PCs, tablets, and laptops, Microsoft also confirmed today at the San Francisco event that a new version of the operating system is also coming for Windows Phone, but more specifics would only be provided at a later time.

Today’s event was all about the desktop and the improvements that Microsoft is making to the PC version of the operating system, but Joe Belfiore, who’s in charge with the mobile business at the company, confirmed that Windows Phone 10 would be launched next year.

Windows Phone 10 will be a natural step forward, he said, and will come without a desktop, which is more or less a hint that Redmond is working to merge its smartphone platform with Windows RT.

The desktop could thus disappear from these versions of Windows 10, as Microsoft is working to make touch the key focus and make it easier for users to perform specific tasks.

Such a change doesn’t come as a surprise and previous reports on the matter said that Microsoft could launch a testing version of the next Windows Phone version in early 2015, most likely in January or February. The stable build could debut together with the desktop sibling, which is due in April 2015.
