It’s no secret that Windows is the number one operating system right now, and even though Windows 8 and 8.1 have relatively low market share at this point, more than 90 percent of the desktop computers worldwide are running Windows.

Statistics provided for the French market by Mediametrie eStat’Web indicate that Windows is at this point powering 69 percent of the computers connected to the Internet.

The second place goes to Apple’s very own iOS, which has a market share in the country of 11 percent, while OS X comes third with 10 percent.

Android and Linux are way behind with 8 and 2 percent, respectively.

As far as Windows is concerned, 61 percent of the users are running Windows 7, while 16 percent of them have are still on Windows XP. The modern Windows 8 has a 13 percent market share, while Windows Vista is next with only 10 percent.

These figures are not at all surprising given the fact that Windows 7 continues to be the number one operating system worldwide, but it’s worth mentioning that in France, Windows 8 has grown so much that it nearly overtook Windows XP.

As you probably heard, Windows XP will be officially discontinued on April 8, 2014, so Microsoft wants all users to abandon the ancient platform and move to a newer operating system such as Windows 7 or 8.

And still, not everyone seems to be getting the message, as Windows XP is still running on more than 30 percent of computers worldwide, according to Net Applications data.

Many of the consumers still using Windows XP have already expressed their intention to stick to the aging platform beyond its retirement, but the software giant hopes to cut its market share to at least 13 percent before April 8.
