One more handset that is expected to come to the market during the ongoing year while running under the upcoming Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system (out of a total of 31 devices that should include it) is the HP iPAQ K3 mobile phone, which is reported to come under the codename “Obsidian” and land on the airwaves of AT&T.

It seems that HP is determined to make a great re-entrance onto the smartphone market after several months of complete silence, as the new iPAQ K3 “Obsidian” is expected to feature not only the upcoming iteration of Windows Mobile, but also a Qualcomm chipset and a 528MHz ARM processor, 256MB of RAM, 512MB of ROM and a microSD memory card slot for additional storage space.

The specification list of the handset also shows that it should include UMTS / tri-band HSDPA / GSM / GPRS / EDGE class 12 connectivity, along with WLAN 802.11 b/g capabilities, Bluetooth 2.0, micro-USB port for data transfer and charging, 3.5mm headphone jack, built-in GPS receiver, proximity sensor and light sensor.

In addition, the phone sports a 2.8-inch full touchscreen QVGA display, as well as a 2-megapixel photo snapper with LED Flash and video recording capabilities (a cameraless model is also expected to come to the market), video playback and streaming capabilities, audio player, SMS, MMS and Instant Messaging (Windows Live, Microsoft Direct Push) capabilities.

The HP iPAQ K3 measures 117 x 65 x 13.5mm and packs inside a Li-Ion 1400 mAh battery, though no details on its performance capabilities have been unveiled. According to the news, we should be able to see the Windows Mobile 6.5-powered mobile phone coming to the market sometime during the holiday season, or just before it, while sporting the AT&T branding, just as the recently spotted HTC Warhawk and Fortress do. Stay tuned to learn more details on this as soon as they become available.

I'm really excited for this device. My current smart phone is the iPAQ 910c and I absolutely LOVE that little thing! This one looks like a good successor to it, although the camera taking a step back from 3MP (on the 910c) to 2MP is a bit disappointing.
