On handsets from other makers as well

Redmond-based Microsoft is expected to come to the market with a new iteration of its operating system for mobile phones in the near future, the Windows Mobile 6.5, which is already known to bring forth a wide range of improvements when compared to already existing iterations of the platform, though no exact details on when the OS would become available were unveiled until now.

Moreover, while there are a lot of mobile phones that run under the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform on the market, there are little details on which of these handsets will be able to run the future version, or on which of them will be chosen for such an upgrade, though at least two newly launched devices will see Windows Mobile 6.5, namely the HTC Touch Pro2 and HTC Touch Diamond2.

According to the latest news on the web, the future operating system will also come on a series of handsets coming from LG and Acer, not to mention the Toshiba TG01, already expected to be eligible for the upgrade. These should complete the list of the 10 devices that Microsoft stated at one point this year that Windows Mobile 6.5 OS would come on in 2009.

A recent post on The Windows Phone Guy blog shows eight models out of the ten expected: HTC Touch Diamond 2, HTC Touch Pro 2, LG HQ, LG Eigen and four undisclosed new Acer devices. If we introduce the Toshiba TG01 into equation, we have nine phones out of ten, so we're missing only one link, which should be the Samsung Jack, recently announced for AT&T with WinMo 6.1 and upgradeability to WM 6.5.

On the other hand, this list might not be the most accurate of all, mainly given the fact that some obvious WM phones eligible for upgrade were left out of it. At the same time, we should take into consideration the fact that David Weeks, Windows Mobile product manager, has recently said that the platform will actually be included in 31 handsets this year, as reported, so we should expect the models in the above list to run Windows Mobile 6.5 as well.
