In the wild

Leaks are never that far from new development milestones of Windows operating systems built in Redmond, and the next iteration of the company’s mobile platform is no exception to this rule. Microsoft is currently hard at work wrapping up Windows Mobile 6.5 with the official device launch nothing more than a few months away. In this regard, the Redmond company is producing a constant flow of interim builds of the mobile OS, the latest of which was leaked at the end of the past week. Windows Mobile 6.5 Build 23034 is now available for download in the wild, from various illegal third-party sources.

Microsoft of course continues to be mum on immediate or future plans related to Windows Mobile, in particular with version 7 of the operating system, but also with the upcoming v6.5. There’s no word from the Redmond company confirming Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional CE OS 5.2.23034 (Build 23034.5.3.0) (from xda-developers via wmpoweruser). However the ROM can already be grabbed from non-Microsoft sources. The screenshots included with this article reveal that Microsoft has tweaked the graphical user interface of 23034, with the Start button of Windows Mobile 6.5 touched up.

At the same time, through the video embedded at the bottom of the article (from FuzeMobility) users will be able to get a taste of Windows Mobile 6.5 Build 23028, a build that has been stripped from all enhancements specific to device manufacturers. Again, the software giant indicates a focus on optimizing the GUI, a move that points to the proximity of the device launch of Windows Mobile 6.5.

Recently leaked information reveals that Windows Mobile 6.5 will be launched on October 1st, 2009, and that Microsoft plans to develop a major update early in 2010. At the same time, Windows Mobile 7 is said to have slipped from the initial product roadmap, with availability now in the second half of 2010.
