Q4OS is a Linux distribution that's been developed to provide an experience similar to that of a Windows operating systems, which is something that's not usually done in the open source world. Now, a new update has been made available and it looks like developers are finally closing in the final version.

Making a Linux distribution look like a Windows one, especially one of the older versions, is not a terribly difficult thing to do. With a theme and an icon pack, you can make do and you can copy many familiar elements. The Q4OS developers took this customization a step further and they made the changes right in the desktop environment, which is rather unusual, even for Linux distros.

The makers of Q4OS have been working on this distribution for a long time, but only recently have they finally expressed their interest in providing a stable and round "1.0" version that would gather all the features implemented so far.

For this distro, looking like Windows is a feature, not a bug

Important changes are being made all the time to the OS and numerous interesting features have landed in the past few months. Now, the developers are tying up some loose ends, and it looks like they are almost done.

"Final Q4OS ver.1 will be supported for at least 5 years, the release date is preliminarily set at about the turn of April and May. It is based, as announced, on Debian Jessie and Trinity R14, inheriting new features and packages, but preserving famous Debian stability. There are quite significant Q4OS specific improvements and fixes, UEFI boot support, new firmware and more," reads the official announcement.

You can download Q4OS 1.1 RC2 right now from Softpedia and give it a spin. Please keep in mind that no Live CD is available and that you will have to install it in order to test it.
