Microsoft introduced a public beta of Windows Live Messenger 8.1 at the end of October 2006. Recently, speculations have begun emerging pointing to the release date of the final version of Windows Live Messenger 8.1. Microsoft has yet to confirm the date, but apparently Live Messenger 8.1 will be released on January 25, 2007, just a couple of days from now.

Live Messenger 8.1 was designed to be an updated version of the 8.0 edition. In fact, Live Messenger build 8.1.0168.00 presented a number of new features compared to its predecessor. Microsoft has labored to enhance the sign-in performances delivered by its IM client.

Additionally, the Redmond Company has automated the way in which it delivers updates for Windows Live Messenger. The server performances of the Microsoft instant messaging client have been optimized.

Windows Live Messenger 8.1 features, even in beta stage, revamped contact cards. Via the redesign, Live Messenger delivers users additional information about their friends and streamlines contact capabilities.

With Live Messenger 8.1, users will be able to have access their personal data independent from the machine they sign-in. Microsoft informed that the display name, status and personalization settings will travel with the users to any computer.

Another aspect, and a very interesting initiative from Microsoft, is the fact that Windows Live Messenger 8.1 enables users to make two PC-to-phone calls free of charge, anywhere in the world, via the VoIP capabilities of the IM client.
