Windows Home Server, formerly codenamed Q and Quattro, is a Microsoft product designed to integrate at the core of a home network and provide automatic backup, storage, advanced connectivity, restoring and sharing capabilities. Windows Home Server acts a central hub for the network, also allowing access to all the files it stores, as well as to the computers and devices connected both locally and remotely. In fact, the Remote Access feature in the Windows Home Server will permit users to easily connect to both the server and the machines on the network, from a remote location. This is possible via a web browser and the data associated with a user account created in the
Windows Home Server Console.

"You can register for your own Internet domain name (for example, SmithFamily.HomeServer.com), and then you can use your personalized domain name to remotely access your home server. After you log on to your home server, you can quickly connect to your home computers and run applications, just like you can when you are sitting in front of that computer. With Remote Access, families and home-based businesses can easily access their home computers, using the same user interface. You can add up to 10 user accounts, and for each one you can easily enable and disable the ability to remotely connect to your home server," Microsoft revealed.

There are a few issues that you need to be aware of, as the process of setting up Windows Home Server and the adjacent computers for remote connectivity is not as streamlined at it might seem. For example, access to the computers on the network is restricted via the "Computers" tab to machines "Available for connection" and running exclusively: Windows XP Professional with SP2; Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005; Windows XP Tablet Edition with SP2 and Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, or Windows Vista Enterprise. Additionally, users will only be able to connect to the home computers through the Internet Explorer browser since Remote Access is directly correlated with an ActiveX control.

Fortunately enough, Microsoft is offering for download a Technical Brief for Windows Home Server Remote Access, providing "an in-depth look at the features and functionality of Windows Home Server Remote Access". Users will be able to learn about the features and functionality of Remote Access in Windows Home Server, as well as the benefits, and even learn how to enable the capabilities, test and troubleshoot them, and even find tips and tricks for customization. The .PDF version is available here, the .DOCX can be downloaded from here.
