Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 will play well with the 64-bit versions of Windows Vista SP1, but will also enable users to benefit from closer integration with the current Windows operating systems, as well as add features and functionality. The Windows Home Server team, which has done an excellent job in the past at being more than just "translucent" with the development of the home server operating system, has now announced the availability of Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 by mid 2008.

"The first minor release of Windows Home Server was announced today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Power Pack 1, formerly code named 'UR1', will ship in the first half of 2008 and be made available to existing customers of Windows Home Server via Windows Update", revealed a member of the WHS team.

The overview provided for the first minor update to Windows Home Server details the evolution of the Connector software, WSH Data Backup capabilities, Remote Access, and the backup database. "When Power Pack 1 ships, the Windows Home Server Connector will be able to be installed on home computers running Windows Vista x64 editions. Functionality is added to detect that the version of the Windows Home Server Connector software is aligned with the version of Windows Home Server software. Users will be prompted to update either the home computers or their home server software under certain circumstances", the WSH team member added.

Starting with the Power Pack, users will be able to backup the contents of Windows Home Server when adding a new hard drive. The update will also bring to the table additional options related to remote access capabilities. Furthermore, Power Pack 1 will feature consistency error correcting capabilities designed to address backup database issues.
