Windows 8 does come with built-in anti-virus protection and as far as many users are concerned, it’s good enough to protect locally-stored files from malware and other threats found online.

Statistics provided by OPSWAT for the month of October show that Windows Defender is still the number one security product used on Windows 8, followed by avast! Free Antivirus and Kaspersky Internet Security. ESET Smart Security (which we recently reviewed) and Avira Free Antivirus are also among the top security software for Windows 8 users.

Windows 7 users, on the other hand, go for Avast!, but Microsoft’s Security Essentials remains the second most used security app on this OS version. As for Windows XP, more than 20 percent of users are running the same Security Essentials app, while Avira Free Antivirus is their second choice.
